Beaufort hat

The Beaufort wind scale allows sailors to estimate wind speed; at 19-24 mph (a “fresh breeze”), waves􀀀 are topped􀀀 with whitecaps, and foam begins to spray􀀀 from their peaks.􀀀 (For those landlocked, small trees􀀀sway!) The color and􀀀 pattern of th􀀀is hat remind me of 􀀀billowing whitecaps, and􀀀 the yarn—a cotton􀀀-􀀀microfiber􀀀blend􀀀—􀀀is suitable for a chilly􀀀 afternoon on the water,􀀀even in mid􀀀-􀀀summer.

MATERIALS

Jo Sharp Desert Garden Aran Cotton (65% cotton, 35% microfibre), Colour 237 (Solstice),􀀀 2 [2,􀀀3] 50 gm. balls. Possible substitutes: Jo Sharp Silk Road Aran, Lamb’s Pride􀀀 Worsted, Blue Sky Cotton, Classic Elite Four Seasons Cotton or Bazic􀀀 1 16􀀀-􀀀inch circular needle, US size 8 (5 mm); set double􀀀-􀀀pointed needles, US size 8 (5 mm)

SIZES & MEASUREMENTS

Small-med child [med child􀀀-􀀀med adult, large adult]􀀀 13.5 [16, 18.5] inch circ., unstretched; will stretch to fit up to 18.5 [22, 25] inch head circ.

GAUGE

Approx 18 sts/26 rows to 4 in/10 cm, unstretched; normally I would say CHECK􀀀 GAUGE ON BLOCKED SW􀀀ATCH, but this is optional for this pattern, as hat will be􀀀 stretched while worn.

SPIRAL STITCH PATTERN (mult of 12)

Rnd 1: P3, yo, k4, k2tog, k3; rep to end of rnd.

Rnd 2: P3, k1, yo, k4, k2tog, k2; rep to end of rnd.

Rnd 3: P3, k2, yo, k4, k2tog, k1; rep to end of rnd.

Rnd 4: P3, k3, yo, k4, k2tog; rep to end of rnd.

Repeat these four rows for patt.

DIRECTIONS

Cast on 60 [72, 84] sts, join (take care not to twist stitches), pm and􀀀work approx 1(1, 1.5)􀀀 in of 3X3 ribbing (P3, k3; rep to end of rnd)􀀀, then begin spiral stitch pattern. (Optional:􀀀 skip ribbing).􀀀Work until hat measures approx 4.5 [5.5, 6.5] in from bottom edge; end􀀀 with patt Rnd 4.

Crown decrease rnds (if using circular needle, switch to dpns as needed):

Rnd 1: P1, p2tog, yo, k3, k2tog, k4; rep to end of rnd. 55 [66, 77] sts.

Rnd 2: P2, k1, yo, k3, k3tog, k2; rep to end of rnd. 50 [60, 70] sts

Rnd 3: P2, k2, yo, k2tog, k2, k2tog; rep to end of rnd. 45 [54, 63] sts.

Rnd 4: P2, k3, k2tog, k2; rep to end of rnd. 40 [48, 56] sts.

Rnd 5: P2, k3, k2tog, k1; rep to end of rnd. 35 [42, 49] sts.

Rnd 6: P2tog, k5; rep to end of rnd. 30 [36, 42] sts.

Rnd 7: P1, k3, k2tog; rep to end of rnd. 25 [30, 35] sts.

Rnd 8: P1, k3tog, k1; rep to end of rnd. 15 [18, 21] sts.

Rnd 9: P1, k2tog; rep to end of rnd. 10 [12, 14] sts.

Rnd 10; K2tog; rep to end of rnd. 5 [6, 7] sts. Break yarn, thread thru rem sts and fasten
